In our second Derren Brown video we are going to look at how we describe something that is happening.

In a lot of cases, we use the present simple (and sometimes other present tenses) to describe what happens in a movie, book, or video. We can also use the past simple, but it is generally more common to use the present tenses.

The following video shows Derren Brown putting a wallet full of money in it and leaving it on the pavement. Do you think that somebody will pick it up?

Let’s find out:

The Video

As you can see, nobody took the wallet!

Description

As mentioned, it’s very common to describe what is happens in a video using the present simple. Here is my description (with audio):

Derren is standing on a busy street in London (Regent St). He counts some money, puts it in a wallet, and then smiles at the camera.

He then puts the wallet on the pavement (or sidewalk in AmE), draws a yellow circle around it and walks away. He leaves it there for a few hours. The video shows people walking past it, but nobody picks it up. Some look down at it, while most people just ignore it. One person, who has an umbrella, stops right in front of it, but decides to go around it and continues walking.

When it’s dark, Derren returns and picks up the wallet. He checks that the money is still there, puts the wallet in his pocket, and walks down the street.

Exercise 1

Complete the dialogue (without looking) using the following prepositions.

I think nobody picked up the wallet because It was not their money or they probably thought it was the man’s trap to find out someone’s greed
