IELTS Writing Task 2
In task 2 of the IELTS writing exam you will have to write an essay of at least 250 words and should spend 40 minutes on this task. There are four different types of questions (and others that more or less fit into the categories below) that you may get asked, and it is important to at least have some experience of each of these.
Let’s take a look at the four different types of essay questions:
Type 1: Two Sides of the Story
In this type of question you will be given a problem with two opposing arguments. In this type of question you should introduce the topic, write about both arguments, and then conclude with your opinion. Here is an example question with the structure of the essay:
These days, football players earn a lot of money from their clubs. Some people believe this is fair while others believe that they are paid too much. Discuss both sides of the argument and then give your opinion.
Introduction: Reword the statement. (Key phrase): This essay discusses…
1st Paragraph – Body: Advantages of the first argument.
2nd Paragraph – Body: Advantages of the second argument.
Conclusion: Sum up the arguments briefly and state which side you agree with.
Type 2: The Two Questions
In this question you are usually presented with a problem, an opinion or a phenomenon and then a solution. Here is an example and a breakdown of how to answer this type of question:
Young people are finding it more difficult to find a job after leaving university. Why are young people having problems finding work, and what are some of the possible solutions?
Introduction: Rephrase the statement and introduce the topic. (This essay discusses…)
1st Paragraph Body: Answer the first question.
2nd Paragraph Body: Answer the second question.
Conclusion: Conclude the essay and give your opinion about the best solution.
Type 3: Do You Agree?
This type of question simply gives you a statement and then asks if you agree. Here is an example question:
There is a trend towards a more open society where people share their information on social media websites. However, this is a very dangerous situation where the information can get into the wrong hands. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Introduction: Rephrase question and state your opinion.
1st, 2nd, and possibly 3rd Paragraph – Body: Give reasons for your opinion.
Conclusion: Summary and then state your opinion based on the reasons given.
Type 4: What’s the Solution?
In this essay you will be given a problem and asked about possible solutions. Example:

Introduction: Rewrite the statement and introduce the essay.
1st Paragraph – Body: Write about the issue and state why it is a problem.
2nd/3rd Paragraph – Body: Talk about possible solutions.
